You will experience true nepali hospitality and traditional country life, but also learn a lot about the countrys culture. This knowledge is impossible to get from a book or a trekk. Jyamrong is a scattered farmers village just above the Netrawati river. The place is in Dhading District, approximately 6-7 hours journey from Kathmandu. (By bus 6 hours. Then 1 hours walk) The Sapkota family is Rams parents, three brothers and one sister. His father, mother and sister (with her family) lives here. Most of the people of Jyamrong are brahmins, which means the highest hindu caste. Close by are also sudras, chetris, magars and tamangs. You will be able to learn a lot about how the cast system works, but also about politics and social issues – see below about the Jyamrong social welfare project. Besides all this, the area also holds a great natural beauty. The Netrawati River just cuts rigth through a green valley with forests and amazing terrace fields. This area is very good for birdwatching and it also holds leopards and martens.
How do you stay?
In Rams house there are a few
guest beds. This house is just a few meters from his parents house,
where you eat together with the family (outside on the acctual door
step). There is a toilet a few meters away, aswell as water for washing.
The food is simple but tasty country food: tea, bread and egg for
breakfast, noodle soup, dal bhat and pop corn for lunch and dinner.
Besides the people living here, there is also hens, a goat and a
buffalo. Close by are rice fields, sugar cane, papaya and mango. You
might enjoy it. · You can take part of daily rutines. Make chapatis, harvesting rice, take care of the cattle or just stay, relax and talk. · The Netrawati River is close by. You can go swiming, fishing or birdwatching. · With Ram you can visit different villages and talk to people (Ram will translate!). There is also a brilliant mango garden close by. · You can visit the village school and maybe even teach by yourself. · Make a day hike to Jyamrong Durbar, an old royal palace with striking views over the Himalayas.
