Api Himal Trek

The 7,132-metre Api Himal is considered as the highest mountain of far-west Nepal. The trekking region is quite remote and untoched. Until now, very few tourists have visited the region. The real wilderness of the Nature can be experienced along this trail. Beautiful mountain landscape, cultural diversity, rapid rivers and pristine forests are the main attractions of this region. Apart from the scenic beauty, off-beaten trails and mysterious culture, the region offers a panoramic view of the 7,817-metre Mt. Nandadevi, which lies in Uttar Pradesh of India, Thado Dhunga Tuppa (5,368m.), Api Himal, Rajamba (6,537m.), Kapchuli and many other peaks. The 6,850-metre peak of Kapchuli is also known as Jethibahurani. There is also a lake called Kalidhunga, which is about one and half hours’ walk from Api Himal Base Camp. This is one of the holy lakes of this area.

The region is equally popular among those interested in bird watching. Agriculture is the main occupation of the local people. The mixed local community includes Chhetries, Mahara, Bohora, Thekare, Jhakari and Lohar (iron-smith).A nomad community known as “Raute” is also found in the area. An estimated 22 people of this unique community are in the area. The people of this community have their own language; they do not speak Nepali. It is said that they used to live in Dhawaliwadar (cave) in the past. During winter, they descend to the Terai (hot region) and reach as far as Indian border. During summer, they ascend up to Api Himal Base Camp. They are said to keep goats. A leader of the community takes the goats to the market for sale. If you are lucky, you can encounter with them while on the trek.
